Collaborators:
Miquel Hernàndez (Sciència.cat DB database creation and maintenance)
Location: Departament de Filologia Catalana i Lingüística General, Facultat de Filologia i Comunicació, Universitat de Barcelona
Objectives:
- Development of the Sciència.cat DB database: revision and ongoing publication of materials incorporated in previous iterations (text and manuscript descriptions); addition of new descriptions of manuscripts, early printed books, documents relating to books and reading, and technical vocabulary; continuation of the systematic examination of medieval Catalan literary works for topics relating to medicine, science and technology; maintenance of the bibliography section (Cifuentes, Ferragud, Serrano). First steps of the incorporation of Luis García Ballester’s archive to the documents section (Ferragud) and of the Catalan medical and pharmacological lexicon written in Hebrew alphabet (aljamiado) to the technical vocabulary section (Blasco). Maintenance of the Sciència.cat website as both information resource and tool for the dissemination of research (sections on topics and tributes).
- Use of the Catalan material classified in Sciència.cat DB and of materials corresponding to its Western Mediterranean context (from the Occitan, Iberian and Italic areas), in the form of critical editions and studies on various historical and philological issues. In particular, this includes the edition of the Catalan translations of the Isagoge by Johannitius (Carré and Cifuentes); the Catalan translation by Ferrer Saiol of Palladius’ Opus agriculturae (Sebastian); an anonymous agriculture treatise in Catalan (Capuano); the French, Occitan and Italian translations of Practica oculorum by Benvenuto Grafeo (Zamuner); and an Italian translation of the chapter "De urinis" from the Liber introductorius by Michael Scot (Rapisarda). Studies on personalized medical advice in Spanish and Catalan (Serrano), the interaction between science and literature (Ferragud), the origin of legal medicine (Ferragud) and falconry (Olmos). Doctoral theses on nautical vocabulary (Borsato), a Catalan translation of alchemy (Buosi), the mathematical vocabulary (Fragomeli), the formation of the manuscript fund of the Biblioteca de Catalunya (Gudayol), a medical recipe book in Catalan and it vocabulary (Lemme), a veterinary medicine treatise in Catalan (Ribugent), an early modern surgery treatise in Catalan (Muñoz), and of several early modern medical works from the Valencian area (Marcelo, Sanchis).
- Research on technical vocabulary, primarily in Catalan, and on mutilingualism in selected texts, with special attention to the phenomenon of Hebrew aljamia. Catalan vocabulary will be examined, in some cases comparatively, in medicine (Carré, Cifuentes), ophthalmology (Zamuner), agriculture (Sebastian, Capuano), pharmacology (Lemme), alchemy (Buosi), nautics (Borsato), mathematics (Fragomeli), and veterinary medicine (Ribugent). New edition of two lists of trilingual pharmacological synonyms (Arabic, Catalan and Latin) written in Hebrew alphabet (Blasco). Study of multilingualism in the medical texts of the Catalan-Aragonese Jews (Baum), and the medical and natural-philosophical vocabulary in Arabic, in Hebrew and in Hebrew aljamia in the Occitan-Catalan area (Benmokhtar, Lizandra).
